希臘公投正式否決債權方的紓困條件，「希臘脫歐」（Grexit）的可能性愈來愈高，為解流動現金不足的燃眉之急，不少專家預測，希臘可能棄歐元走回頭路，使用2002年加入歐元區前的舊國幣德拉克馬（drachma）。
據英國《電訊報》報導，希臘私下已與印製全球150種貨幣的英國公司德拉魯（De La Rue）接觸，洽談印製德拉克馬事宜。但是印鈔並非說印就印，至少得準備3至6個月，成本粗估要5000萬至6000萬美元，所以希臘即便再發行舊國幣，也會與歐元暫時併行一陣子。
改用舊國幣，絕非簡單的萬靈丹。多倫多大學羅特曼管理學院財金教授哈金斯說，印鈔之前，希臘政府要先定出德拉克馬和歐元之間的名目匯率，日後用希幣支付該履行的款項，也讓人民到銀行有錢可領。但他警告，印鈔固然解了當務之急，但希幣匯價會快速貶值，甚至崩盤，導致希幣和廢紙沒兩樣。
他也警告，希幣匯價大貶，對希臘經濟造成的立即衝擊是進口成本增加，而所有存款改以希幣計價後，帳面的財產也會跟著大幅縮水。影響所及，民眾的生活更苦，企業將掀裁員風，並導致通貨膨脹。
此外，改用德拉克馬後，希臘和歐元區其他債權國的緊張態勢也會升高，尤其會讓義大利和西班牙不滿。義、西2國也欠了大筆金額，靠著勒緊腰帶陸續走出困境，反觀希臘違約賴帳，難免讓2國忿忿不平，也為歐元區的未來增加變數。
